The Galloway Hoard: Viking-age Treasure

Discover the Galloway Hoard, the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland.

Buried around AD 900 and containing over 100 objects, from silver, gold and jewelled treasures to rarely surviving textiles, including wool, linen, and Scotland’s earliest examples of silk, the Galloway Hoard brings together the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland.

Discovered by a metal detectorist in Dumfries and Galloway in 2014, the Hoard was allocated to National Museums Scotland in 2017.

In this free exhibition, which runs until 12 September 2021, see at first hand the Hoard’s cleaned and conserved objects, revealing intricate decoration not seen since the objects’ burial more than 1,000 years ago. Delve deeper and examine hidden details found in X-rays, CT scans, and 3D models.

Great British Food Festival

Or why not choose some delightful handmade gifts in the Craft and Gift Marquee; go on an eye-opening foraging walk with an expert guide; or relax – with food & drink in hand – as you listen to one of the day’s many musical talents.

Granton Gasworks and Warehouse

The Hidden Door Festival opens up forgotten urban spaces for the public to explore and discover incredible music, art, theatre, film, dance, spoken word, and more.

This year’s Hidden Door Festival is heading to Granton Gasworks for 5 days of outdoor fun from 15-19 September.  Where they will be transforming a nearby warehouse as a performance and exhibition space to showcase local emerging talent.
