No matter what time of year you visit Edinburgh, you’re guaranteed to be spoilt rotten for things to do and see. As the summer comes to an end September sees the city become somewhat quieter after the past couple of months when the festivals are at their peak, although this year is definitely different from the usual. September still holds some great events and is the ideal time to visit our stunning city and explore at a slower pace.

National Museum of Scotland, Chambers St, Edinburgh, EH1 1JF
Buried around AD 900 and containing over 100 objects, from silver, gold and jewelled treasures to rarely surviving textiles, including wool, linen, and Scotland’s earliest examples of silk, the Galloway Hoard brings together the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland.
Discovered by a metal detectorist in Dumfries and Galloway in 2014, the Hoard was allocated to National Museums Scotland in 2017.
In this free exhibition, which runs until 12 September 2021, see at first hand the Hoard’s cleaned and conserved objects, revealing intricate decoration not seen since the objects’ burial more than 1,000 years ago. Delve deeper and examine hidden details found in X-rays, CT scans, and 3D models.

Museums & Galleries Edinburgh
A community-led outreach project designed to mark the centennial commemoration of the 1920 Edinburgh Boundaries Extension and Tramways Act, ReDrawing Edinburgh celebrates the strong independent identities of the areas of Cramond, Colinton, Corstorphine, Liberton, and Leith and how they have retained them throughout the past century.
In November 1920, Edinburgh’s city boundaries were extended to incorporate the Burgh of Leith in the north, the Midlothian parishes of Cramond, Corstorphine & Colinton, and Liberton to the west and south of the city. The expansion meant the city grew from 17 square miles to 53 square miles and increased its population from 320,000 to 425,000. The ‘amalgamation’, as it was referred to at the time, was welcomed by some but opposed by others – in particular Leith Town Council who fought to retain its independence.
